چکیده

The sequence complexity of sea urchin embryo micromere RNA is about 75% of that of total 16-cell embryo cytoplasmic RNA, as reported earlier by Rodgers and Gross [Rodgers, W. H., and Gross, P. R. (1978) Cell 14, 279-2881. In contrast to the rest of the embryo, there are few, if any, complex maternal RNA species in the micromere cytoplasm which are not represented in the polysomes. The micromeres do not contain detectable quantities of high-complexity nuclear RNA, though such RNA exists in other cells of the fourth-cleavage embryo.

Early gene expression along the animal-vegetal axis in sea urchin embryoids and grafted embryos.

The HE gene is the earliest strictly zygotic gene activated during sea urchin embryogenesis. It is transiently expressed in a radially symmetrical domain covering the animal-most two-thirds of the blastula. The border of this domain, which is orthogonal to the primordial animal-vegetal axis, is shifted towards the animal pole in Li+-treated embryos. Exogenous micromeres implanted at the animal ...

Three cell recognition changes accompany the ingression of sea urchin primary mesenchyme cells.

At gastrulation the primary mesenchyme cells of sea urchin embryos lose contact with the extracellular hyaline layer and with neighboring blastomeres as they pass through the basal lamina and enter the blastocoel. This delamination process was examined using a cell-binding assay to follow changes in affinities between mesenchyme cells and their three substrates: hyalin, early gastrula cells, an...

Embryonic, larval and juvenile development of tropical sea urchin, Diadema setosum

Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778), is one of the common echinoids widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, where it occurs from the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and the east coast of Africa to Japan, Australia and Malaysia. To investigate the developmental basis of morphological changes in embryos and larvae, we documented the ontogeny of D. setosum in a controlled laboratory condition at the In...

Ca(2+) in specification of vegetal cell fate in early sea urchin embryos.

In sea urchin embryos, the first specification of cell fate occurs at the fourth cleavage, when small cells (the micromeres) are formed at the vegetal pole. The fate of other blastomeres is dependent on the receipt of cell signals originating from the micromeres. The micromeres are fated to become skeletogenic cells and show the ability to induce the endoderm (the archenteron) in the neighbouri...
